Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Supporting parts

  1. 6.1 m total of 35 mm² (2 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 35 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 125 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which 250/100 is this?

The catalog name does not identify connector style or communication generation. These notes use Victron's current SmartSolar MPPT 250/100 VE.Can manual. Check the unit's full part number and Tr versus MC4 suffix before applying its connector and networking details; an older non-VE.Can unit needs its own matching documentation.

This model charges at up to 100 A. Nominal PV power is 1450 W at 12 V or 5800 W at 48 V. The specification table separates 250 V absolute cold-weather maximum from 245 V startup/operating maximum. Array design must satisfy both.

How do the terminals map?

PV + / PV − represent the array input and BATT + / BATT − the battery connection. VE.Can models have one tracker. On the MC4 version, the three connector pairs are internally paralleled; they are not three independent trackers. The symbol groups them into one pair and omits the remote on/off, relay, VE.Can, VE.Direct, and optional display connections.

Total array short-circuit current is limited to 70 A, while each MC4 connector is limited to 30 A. The Tr PV terminals and battery terminals accept up to 35 mm² / AWG 2. A grouped symbol does not authorize putting all array current through one MC4 connector.

What protection and mounting are specified?

The installation table gives a battery fuse range of 120–140 A for this model. Select the actual fuse and conductor together; a terminal's maximum cable size is not a universal cable recommendation. Provide suitable PV isolation and protect connections against contact.

Mount vertically on a nonflammable surface, terminals downward, with 100 mm clearance above and below, within 3 m of the battery but never directly above it. The connection area is IP22; use a dry installation with appropriate guarding. Rated output is specified up to 40°C.

What must be checked at startup?

Connect the battery first and confirm nominal voltage before connecting PV. Automatic selection covers 12/24/48 V; 36 V requires manual selection. PV must initially exceed battery voltage by 5 V, and subsequently by 1 V.

Select the battery's approved charging profile in VictronConnect and confirm BMS charge permission where applicable. Equalization is disabled by default; enable it only for a battery that permits it. Verify cold Voc and string current independently; output power limiting does not make excessive PV voltage acceptable.

Describe your setup to draft a system with SmartSolar 250/100 connected. Review the selected parts and cable lengths, then edit the diagram in Crimp.

The model only picks parts and draws the connections. Every wire size and fuse rating still comes from Crimp's own sizing, never from the model.
