Sized against ABYC E-11. The design current is the unit's rated output. The length is one way; voltage drop includes an equal-length return.

Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Supporting parts

  1. 6.1 m total of 10 mm² (8 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 10 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 40 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which Wanderer is covered?

The catalog photograph identifies the Wanderer Li 30 A, with a blue Li selection and an RS232 port. These notes therefore use the RNG-CTRL-WND30-LI manual. An older Wanderer without Li selection or RS232 needs its own instructions.

This is a PWM controller, despite the catalog ID beginning with “mppt”. It works with a 12 V battery only, and the specification table limits PV voltage to 25 V. Use an array suited to a 12 V PWM system and check its cold-weather Voc. A wattage description alone does not establish that array current and voltage are acceptable.

How do the terminals map?

The four main terminals correspond directly to PV + / PV − and BATT + / BATT −. The optional temperature-sensor connection and RS232 communications port are not shown in Crimp. This controller has no separate LOAD output; house loads require their own protected battery distribution.

Connect the battery first and then the solar panel. The controller’s terminals clamp stripped conductors; fully open each clamp before insertion and secure the conductor without forcing the screw. A terminal that looks open can still have its clamp raised against the cable entry.

What protection and cable limits apply?

Renogy specifies a 30 A controller-to-battery fuse in the fusing section. The largest terminal size is 8 AWG / 10 mm². Select the conductor for the actual circuit length and installation, and place battery-circuit protection at the source. PV fusing is based on array short-circuit current and the panel’s protection requirements, not an assumed 30 A solar current.

No reliable numeric tightening torque is given in this manual. The enclosure is IP20, so install it dry and vertically, with 150 mm above and below for ventilation. Do not put it in a sealed flooded-battery compartment.

How is the battery type selected?

Hold the gray button for about seven seconds until the type LED flashes, press it to select, and let the flashing stop to save. Green is sealed, orange gel, red flooded, and blue lithium. Confirm the separate type indicator rather than interpreting the PV or battery-status LED as chemistry.

The Li preset is intended for a 12.8 V LFP battery, with 14.2 V default boost and no float/equalization. An optional BT-1, connected through RS232, allows supported parameter changes. It is not built-in Bluetooth, and the battery’s approved charging voltage and temperature limits still govern.

Fit check

Connect it to the rest of your system.

Describe your setup to draft a system with Wanderer 30A connected. Review the selected parts and cable lengths, then edit the diagram in Crimp.

The model only picks parts and draws the connections. Every wire size and fuse rating still comes from Crimp's own sizing, never from the model.
