Run-length and manufacturer assumptions
The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.
Supporting parts
- 6.1 m total of 16 mm² (6 AWG) marine cable
- Terminations for 16 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
- 50 A fuse and holder on the positive run
- Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable
Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which Commander is covered?
This is the CMD-40 / RNG-CTRL-CMD40, covered by Renogy’s Commander 20/40 A Version 2.6 manual, preserved as a manufacturer-authored PDF on Amazon’s document host. It charges 12/24 V batteries at up to 40 A, with 520 W at 12 V / 1040 W at 24 V rated solar power.
The technical table distinguishes 150 V maximum PV Voc at minimum working temperature from 138 V at 25°C. Check the cold-weather string voltage as well as its nominal-condition value. The maximum PV short-circuit current is 50 A; that is an array-input limit, not the 40 A battery charging current.
How do the terminals map?
Crimp’s PV + / PV − and BATT + / BATT − represent the solar and battery pairs. The physical LOAD + / LOAD − pair, temperature-sensor socket and RS485/MT-50 port are omitted. LOAD is limited to 20 A and must not feed an inverter or battery charger. The controller uses negative grounding.
Connect the battery before solar. For disconnection, isolate solar before disconnecting the battery. These steps let the controller establish and retain the correct battery-system voltage.
What conductor and fuse guidance is given?
CMD-40 power terminals accept up to 4 AWG / 25 mm². The manual’s controller-to-battery rule specifies a fuse matching the charging-current rating, giving 40 A for CMD-40. This is manufacturer guidance for the reviewed unit; conductor ampacity, fuse interrupt rating and actual cable voltage drop still need to be checked for the installation.
PV fusing is based on array short-circuit current and string configuration. Do not replace it with a 40 A fuse merely because 40 A appears in the controller’s name. The manual provides no numeric terminal torque. Mount vertically with 150 mm ventilation clearance above and below, in a dry location suitable for its IP30 enclosure.
How are battery settings changed?
The Renogy MT-50 provides battery-type and charge-parameter programming as well as monitoring; the controller’s status LEDs do not provide that full interface. An appropriate USB-to-RS485 converter supports the documented PC workflow. The connector must not be connected as ordinary Ethernet to a computer.
The manual lists sealed lead-acid, gel and flooded battery profiles. It does not establish a ready-made lithium preset or lithium-temperature protection. Confirm any proposed custom battery profile with the battery manufacturer and the installed controller’s capabilities instead of borrowing settings from a Rover Li manual.

Describe your setup to draft a system with Commander MPPT 40A connected. Review the selected parts and cable lengths, then edit the diagram in Crimp.
The model only picks parts and draws the connections. Every wire size and fuse rating still comes from Crimp's own sizing, never from the model.
