Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Supporting parts

  1. 6.1 m total of 95 mm² (3/0 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 95 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 350 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Identify the 12 V XT-250 variant

XT-250 describes an alternator family, not a complete mounting/kit part number. Balmar lists single-foot, saddle and Vortec configurations, with pulley variants. The XT datasheet identifies external P-type regulation with an internal Smart Ready backup regulator. Confirm the full part number; the internally regulated wakeboat XT-IR version has separate instructions.

The 250 A nameplate figure is not a promise of uninterrupted hot-idle charging. Output depends on shaft speed, temperature, belt drive, regulator limits and the battery's permitted charge rate. The catalog's 180 A typical value is a planning assumption that needs an installed-system check.

Follow the correct terminals and return path

Manual page 13 identifies B+, the white stator/tach lead, blue external field lead, red internal-regulator sense lead and brown internal-regulator excite lead. This XT-250 is case-grounded. The canvas GND connection represents its return path through the case/engine grounding system, not proof of a separate isolated negative output stud.

Use the wiring scheme for either the intended external regulator or the supported internal-regulator arrangement. Do not connect both excitation systems by improvisation. Support the heavy output cable so the stud carries no cable weight or vibration load.

Size the drive and charging circuit together

Balmar's family guidance requires a suitable dual-vee or serpentine drive. Verify pulley alignment, belt capacity, engine loading and cooling before increasing field output. Size output/return conductors and battery-side fault protection for the actual installation, including hot engine-bay conditions and voltage drop.

Battery voltage sensing and alternator temperature sensing are important parts of the regulator installation. Keep sense wiring distinct from the high-current output, and use the regulator's specified protection and harness.

Coordinate lithium shutdown

A lithium battery that accepts high charge current can keep the alternator heavily loaded. Configure charge-voltage, current and thermal limits to the battery and alternator specifications. Provide a supported BMS-to-regulator shutdown path so field output is removed before the battery disconnects; an unexpected open circuit while charging can damage the charging system.

Commission gradually with measurements at battery and alternator terminals, checking hot output, belt behaviour and shutdown response. Do not interpret the simplified two-terminal canvas as a complete regulator or load-dump protection design.

Describe your setup to draft a system with XT-250 connected. Review the selected parts and cable lengths, then edit the diagram in Crimp.

The model only picks parts and draws the connections. Every wire size and fuse rating still comes from Crimp's own sizing, never from the model.
