Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Supporting parts

  1. 6.1 m total of 10 mm² (8 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 10 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 40 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which Blue Smart IP22 12/30 is this?

The 12/30 (3) charges up to three 12 V banks with 30 A total. Any output can supply the full current, but the three outputs share that ceiling. The FET isolator prevents current passing between batteries; all outputs follow one charging profile, so the banks must accept the same charge voltages. These details are in the manual, section 4.7, page 15.

The catalog covers separate 120 V and 230 V versions. This manual covers the 230 V version, with a 180–265 VAC input range. Check the charger's label before selecting shore power.

How do the drawn terminals map to the charger?

BATT 1 +, BATT 2 + and BATT 3 + represent the three positive outputs. The real charger has one common negative terminal: the three drawn BATT − connections represent that shared return. The manufacturer's three-bank diagram uses a negative busbar and a protected positive lead to each bank. The AC terminals in Crimp represent the supplied mains cable, rather than a user-accessible AC terminal block. See section 5.2.3, page 24.

What cable, protection and mounting details matter?

  • Battery protection: section 5.2.2 recommends a 40–70 A fuse or breaker range for the 12/30, coordinated with the installed cable and located near each battery. The charger's own 40 A output fuse does not protect the whole battery cable.
  • Cable length: section 5.2.1 specifies at least 10 mm² / 8 AWG through 3 m one way, and 16 mm² / 6 AWG for 3–4.5 m. Its 4.5–6 m range is not recommended. These assume 90°C cable, 30°C ambient, unbundled open routing and at most 3% voltage drop; the table assumes a return of equal length.
  • Terminations and cooling: DC terminals accept up to 16 mm² / 6 AWG and tighten to 2.4 Nm. Mount upright, terminals down, with 100 mm clear above and below, in a dry ventilated location away from battery gases.

What needs configuring before charging?

Select the profile and current limit in VictronConnect to suit every connected battery. Low-current mode limits this model to 15 A. Crimp's cable calculation does not select the charge profile, verify AC protection or allocate charge current between banks; review the manual's cable table alongside the calculated example.
