Supporting parts

  1. 6 m total of 16 mm² (6 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 16 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 40 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which SmartSolar is this?

The SmartSolar 150/35 supplies up to 35 A to a battery. Nominal PV power is 500 W at 12 V, scaling to 2000 W at 48 V. It automatically detects 12, 24, or 48 V; 36 V requires manual selection. The controller has Bluetooth and VE.Direct. Its model number does not mean that 35 A is an unrestricted panel-input rating.

Does the 150/35 have Bluetooth built in?

Check the full name on the controller: SmartSolar 150/35 has built-in Bluetooth for VictronConnect, so it does not need a separate Bluetooth dongle. The similarly numbered BlueSolar 150/35 needs the optional VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle for a Bluetooth connection. The shared 150/35 rating alone does not identify the communication hardware. See the SmartSolar connection options, printed page 7 and the BlueSolar connection options, printed page 7.

Both models also support a VE.Direct to USB interface for a wired connection to VictronConnect on a supported device. If a SmartSolar does not appear over Bluetooth, follow its manual's connection checks before buying an accessory; Bluetooth can be disabled in its settings. These communication accessories do not replace the battery and PV power connections.

What do the connections include?

PV + / PV − map to the array screw terminals and BATT + / BATT − to the battery terminals. There is no physical high-current LOAD pair on this model. The case ground screw, charge-profile rotary selector, and VE.Direct connector are omitted from the simplified symbol. Supply loads from their own fused battery distribution.

Use flexible stranded copper within the 16 mm² / AWG 6 terminal limit, and tighten the battery and PV terminals to 1.6 N·m. Grounding is a system design choice: do not independently bond a PV conductor to earth. Follow the manual's single-point battery-side grounding arrangement and protect exposed terminals against accidental contact.

How is it protected and started?

The installation table, printed page 11 specifies a 40–45 A battery fuse, coordinated with the battery cable. This page's editable example uses 40 A on the battery-positive run; solar-side protection is calculated separately from the array. Isolate PV, connect the battery, wait 10 seconds, and verify system voltage in VictronConnect before connecting the array. PV must exceed battery voltage by 5 V for startup and 1 V while running.

Cold-corrected array Voc must remain below 150 V; the separate datasheet specifies a lower 145 V startup and operating maximum. There is an unresolved manufacturer-source discrepancy for array Isc: the Rev 13 manual gives 35 A, while the separate datasheet gives 40 A. The catalog retains the lower 35 A limit. Confirm the installed product's permitted Isc with Victron before designing to the higher figure; output current limiting does not resolve this discrepancy.

What is configured during commissioning?

Set battery voltage and an approved chemistry profile; check absorption, float, current limit, and equalization behavior. Automatic voltage detection does not identify chemistry. A lithium BMS must be able to stop charging, and its temperature restrictions still apply.

Mount vertically, terminals down, with 100 mm above and below, within 3 m of the battery but not over it. The electronics are IP43, the connection area IP22, and full rated output applies up to 40°C. Keep connections dry, guarded, and accessible for inspection.
