Run-length and manufacturer assumptions
The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.
Supporting parts
- 6.1 m total of 16 mm² (6 AWG) marine cable
- Terminations for 16 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
- 50 A fuse and holder on the positive run
- Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable
Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which Tracer is covered?
The Tracer4210AN is a 40 A MPPT charger for 12 or 24 V batteries. This walkthrough uses the manufacturer's V2.3 manual distributed in the SV200 software download. Its rated charging power is 520 W at 12 V / 1040 W at 24 V. The 40 A figure also appears as the maximum PV input current in the wiring table; the catalog's former 50 A PV-terminal value was too high for this source.
What do the terminal pairs do?
PV + / PV − connect the array and BATT + / BATT − connect the house battery. The physical unit also has a 40 A LOAD pair, a temperature-sensor connection, chassis grounding point, and RS485 connector, omitted from the simplified drawing. It is a common-negative controller. Inverters must connect directly to a separately protected battery branch, not the load output.
The wiring table, printed page 10 lists 16 mm² / AWG 6 for the 4210AN battery/load wiring and maximum PV wire size. Cable length and voltage drop still need checking. The reviewed manual refers to tightening torque but supplies no numerical value; obtain the hardware-specific requirement rather than borrowing another manufacturer's torque.
Which protection and connection order apply?
The installation instructions, printed page 12 require a battery fuse 1.25–2 times rated current, equivalent to 50–80 A for this 40 A model, within 150 mm of the battery and coordinated with the cable. Keep disconnects open while wiring. Connect battery, then load, then PV; disconnect in reverse order. Confirm detected battery voltage before applying solar.
How is the array sized?
The specification table distinguishes 100 V Voc at the minimum operating temperature from 92 V at 25°C. These temperature qualifiers were reversed in the old catalog description. Also check the 40 A array Isc limit and the battery voltage +2 V to 72 V MPPT range. Charge-current clipping does not make excessive Voc or input current acceptable.
What must be configured and checked?
Select the battery type and charging parameters through the supported controls. Lead-acid voltage can be recognized automatically, but lithium system voltage must be set explicitly. Lithium temperature compensation is zero; correct chemistry selection does not replace the BMS or battery temperature restrictions. Verify equalization behavior before connecting a chemistry that cannot tolerate it.
Mount with 150 mm clearance above and below and adequate airflow, outside a sealed battery compartment. The enclosure is IP30, so keep it dry. Inspect polarity, actual battery voltage, charging state, and load-disconnect behavior after commissioning.
