Cable sizing for this example

Use the diagram as a starting point for your installation. Replace the example equipment and cable lengths with your own, and check the connections against your exact model's instructions.

Cable sizes depend on the connected equipment, current and cable lengths. Add those details in Crimp to size each run.

Which Orion is this?

This is the Orion-Tr 48/12-30 isolated DC-DC converter, without “Smart” in the name. It supplies a lower-voltage DC load from a nominal 48 V source. Victron's current converter datasheet explicitly says this family is not intended for battery charging and points to Orion-Tr Smart chargers instead. An adjustable output and remote switch do not provide a battery charge profile or BMS integration.

The older installation leaflet mentions connecting a battery after voltage adjustment. That sentence does not override the current product guidance. Use this entry for a regulated load supply; verify a separate, suitable charging product if the destination is a battery.

How do the terminals map?

Crimp's IN + / IN − represent the 48 V source connections; OUT + / OUT − feed the lower-voltage load circuit. Input and output are galvanically isolated. Do not add a negative bridge merely because other converters use a common negative; bonding depends on the complete installation.

The green remote connector and voltage-adjustment potentiometer are omitted from the symbol. The remote wire bridge can be replaced by a low-current switch, following the installation leaflet. It is a control circuit, not a load-current connection.

What limits apply?

The 48/12-30 column lists 32–70 V input, a nominal 12.2 V output, and 10–15 V adjustment. Rated continuous output is 30 A at nominal voltage and 40°C, with 360 W continuous output at 40°C. Raising output voltage changes the available operating margin; the model number is not a promise of the same power at every setting.

Set and measure the output before connecting sensitive loads. Check their maximum voltage and startup demand against the chosen setting.

What protection and mounting are needed?

The 48 V input models have no internal input fuse. Provide external source-circuit protection; neither document supplies a universal fuse amperage for these two installations. Select protection against the actual source fault current, conductor, and load requirements.

The terminals accept up to 16 mm² / AWG 6. Mount in a cool, dry, ventilated location with screw terminals downward for the stated IP43 protection. Output derating is specified above 40°C. Internal overload protection does not protect an undersized source cable or establish a battery-charging design.
