Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Supporting parts

  1. 6.1 m total of 1.5 mm² (16 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 1.5 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 15 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which Orion is covered?

The Orion-Tr Smart 12/24-10 isolated is a Bluetooth-configurable charger that steps a nominal 12 V source up to a 24 V battery. It is the 240 W Smart model shown in the photograph. The specification table, printed page 21 gives 8–17 V input and 10 A continuous output at nominal voltage and 40°C. Its 15 A ten-second figure is not continuous charging capacity.

How do the terminals and controls map?

IN + / IN − connect the starter supply; OUT + / OUT − connect the service battery. Input and output are galvanically isolated. If both negatives are joined through a vehicle chassis, the installation no longer preserves that isolation. The remote H/L connector and its factory jumper are omitted from the four-terminal symbol.

Use flexible stranded copper up to 16 mm² / AWG 6, prepared as described in the manual, and tighten power terminals to 1.6 N·m. The device has no reverse-battery-polarity protection: make connections at the Orion first, check polarity again, then connect the batteries.

Which fuses and cables apply?

The voltage-based protection table, printed page 5 specifies 60 A for a 12 V side and 30 A for a 24 V side. For this step-up arrangement that means the 12 V input and 24 V output use different table rows. At a 2 m cable length, the listed minimum cross-sections are 10 mm² input and 6 mm² output; longer routes need the corresponding table values and a voltage-drop check. These are the current family-manual recommendations, not an inference that this unit always draws 60 A.

What must be configured before charging?

Remove the remote jumper to keep the charger disabled while connecting. Supply the input, then use VictronConnect to select charger mode, battery-approved 24 V charge voltages, and the required absorption behavior. Connect the output battery only after verifying those settings, then enable the remote input.

Review engine-shutdown detection and input-voltage lockout against the actual alternator. A battery-voltage threshold alone can misread a smart alternator's low-voltage phases. Use the documented remote override or BMS control arrangement where required, and verify that charging stops when the engine or battery permission is removed.

Where should it be mounted?

Mount vertically, terminals downward, on a nonflammable surface with 100 mm above and below, near but never above the battery. Keep it dry and ventilated; output derates above 40°C. The battery BMS and its low-temperature charging restrictions remain necessary.
