Run-length and manufacturer assumptions

The editable example uses 3.048 m (10 ft) runs unless a shorter run is stated. Metric overviews round these to 3 m. Adapt the parts and lengths to your installation before choosing cable and protection.

Supporting parts

  1. 6.1 m total of 6 mm² (10 AWG) marine cable
  2. Terminations for 6 mm² cable, matched to the equipment's screw terminals, leads or studs
  3. 20 A fuse and holder on the positive run
  4. Heat-shrink, strain relief and terminal boots sized to the cable

Check stud sizes, fuse type, run length and how warm the space gets against the gear you actually have before you order.

Which IP22 output version is this?

The Blue Smart IP22 12/15 (3) is a 12 V, 15 A mains charger with 3 outputs. Any one output can supply the full 15 A, but all three together share 15 A, not 45 A. All banks must accept the same charge algorithm and voltage. It is sold in separate AC variants: the reviewed 230 V manual specifies 180–265 VAC; the 120 V manual specifies 100–130 VAC. Match the actual plug and nameplate rather than assuming universal input.

How do the connections map?

BATT 1/2/3 + represent the three isolated positive outputs. The real charger has one common negative terminal; the three drawn negatives are logical connections, normally gathered through a negative busbar. Fuse every battery positive separately. Output isolation prevents one battery discharging into another through the charger, but it does not provide three independent charge profiles.

AC L / N / earth represent the permanently attached mains cord. Use its earthed outlet connection. Bluetooth provides configuration and monitoring; there is no exposed AC terminal block implied by the symbol. Make and verify DC connections before applying AC, following the manual's hardwired or temporary-vehicle connection sequence.

Which cable and protection does Victron specify?

The printed page 20 cable table gives 2.5 mm² below 1.5 m; 6 mm² for 1.5–3 m; 10 mm² for 3–6 m for this current rating. Lengths are one way, with equal positive/negative lengths assumed. These recommendations use at least 90°C insulation, open unbundled routing at 30°C, and 3% voltage drop; a bundled, enclosed, or hotter installation needs a separate check.

DC screw terminals accept up to 16 mm² / AWG 6 and tighten to 2.4 N·m. The protection table recommends 20–30 A external battery-side protection, selected with the conductor and fuse type. The charger's own output fuse cannot protect the cable segment fed directly by the battery.

What should be configured?

Set battery chemistry and charge current in VictronConnect. The 15 A model's Low setting is 7.5 A. Normal mode uses 14.4 V absorption, 13.8 V float, and 13.2 V storage; the lithium preset uses 14.2 V absorption and needs a compatible battery/BMS. Recondition is a separate high-voltage lead-acid option, not a lithium setting. This 12/15 is convection cooled; fan-control instructions for larger IP22 models do not imply that it contains a fan.

Where should it be mounted?

Mount vertically, terminals down, on a nonflammable surface with 100 mm above and below. IP22 requires a dry, protected, ventilated site; never mount directly above the battery or seal the two in one compartment. Check polarity, selected mode, actual charging current, and terminal heating during commissioning.
