Cable sizing for this example

Use the diagram as a starting point for your installation. Replace the example equipment and cable lengths with your own, and check the connections against your exact model's instructions.

Cable sizes depend on the connected equipment, current and cable lengths. Add those details in Crimp to size each run.

Which switch is this?

The keyed 6005 m-Series switches one battery circuit ON or OFF. It is not a battery selector or an automatic charging relay. Its instruction sheet rates it at 300 A continuous, 500 A for five minutes and 900 A for 30 seconds, with a 48 V DC maximum. Those time-limited ratings do not justify continuous operation above 300 A.

How does the MiniSwitch 5992 differ from the 6005?

The 6005 shown on this page is a keyed switch mounted separately on a surface or panel, rated 300 A continuous and 48 V DC maximum in its instruction sheet. The MiniSwitch 5992 mounts directly on a battery terminal and is rated 150 A continuous and 32 V DC maximum in its manufacturer specifications. Its 3/8-inch battery mounting hole is distinct from its 5/16-inch-18 cable stud; the mounting arrangement and connection hardware differ from the 6005's two 3/8-inch-16 cable studs.

Blue Sea lists 225 A for five minutes and 450 A starting for the 5992. Neither its product page nor its sales sheet states a duration for that starting rating; do not apply the 6005's 30-second rating to it. Both are manual isolation switches, not fuses or surge-protection devices. Match the exact model, mounting and circuit requirements before choosing one.

How are the two studs connected?

Connect the battery supply to one stud and the isolated load circuit to the other, with the source and cable protection required by that circuit. The switch itself is not a fuse. The 3/8-inch-16 studs accept 3/8-inch or M10 ring terminals. Place the cable terminal against the conducting contact, under the lock washer and nut, and tighten to 120 in-lb / 13.56 N·m.

The manufacturer's full-current rating requires one 4/0 AWG cable per terminal; smaller cables reduce the rating. The sheet contains inconsistent metric equivalents: 95 mm² in its specification table and 120 mm² in translated installation text. Do not treat either as an automatic equivalent for a metric design. Confirm the installation with Blue Sea and size the actual conductors for their route and load.

Where is it mounted?

Use the surface, front-panel or rear-panel arrangement shown on page 2, leaving room for cable bends and the rear insulating cover. The removable cover pieces provide cable access; they do not replace cable support. Keep metal tools and loose conductors away from the exposed studs during assembly.

How should it be operated?

Turn the connected appliances off before turning the switch OFF. Do not switch OFF while the engine is running, as stated on the instruction sheet. An alternator connected to the switched circuit may lose its battery connection. Before maintenance, verify which circuits bypass this switch and isolate those sources separately; the OFF marking describes this switch's circuit only.
